EC set to declare Prof Alidu Seidu MP-elect for Tamale Central

By Francis Kobena Tandoh

The Electoral Commission (EC) is set to declare National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate for the Tamale Central Constituency, Prof. Alidu Seidu, as the Member of Parliament-elect on Tuesday, our sources have confirmed.

The decision stems from the fact that the University of Ghana political science lecturer is the sole candidate who has filed to contest the seat at the close of the nomination period set by the EC.

Some candidates from the People’s National Convention (PNC) and the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) had initially picked up forms but later withdrew, leaving Prof. Alidu Seidu as the sole candidate.

Despite the fact that the EC has set September 30, 2025, to hold a by-election in the Tamale Central Constituency, the election will not be held because only one person, according to the EC, has so far filed to contest.

Under the relevant regulation (Regulation 13 of C.I. 127, sub-regulation 3), “If at the close of nominations only one person remains, the Electoral Commission can declare them elected without holding a vote.”

The by-election for the Tamale Central Constituency became necessary following the demise of the former MP Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed on August 6 this year.

Prof. Seidu won the NDC primaries held in the constituency early this month by defeating 11 other candidates. End item
