EC to hold Akwatia Constituency by-election on Sept. 2

The Electoral Commission (EC) has scheduled to hold a by-election in the Akwatia Constituency on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, according to a statement released here on Wednesday.

The statement, signed by EC Chairperson Jean Mensa, confirmed that the seat has become vacant in line with Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution, necessitating a by-election.

The Akwatia Constituency seat was declared vacant by Parliament following the passing of the sitting Member of Parliament for the area, Ernest Yaw Kumi, on Monday, July 7, 2025.

Nomination forms, according to the electoral management body, will be received from prospective candidates from Monday, August 11 to Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at the Denkyembour District Office of the EC. Submissions will be accepted between 9:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., and from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily.

The EC directed interested aspirants to:

  • Download nomination forms from www.ec.gov.gh between July 30 and August 13, 2025
  • Submit four copies of completed forms
  • Secure endorsements from two registered voters (a proposer and a seconder) and 18 other registered voters in the constituency
  • Provide two recent passport-sized photographs (red background, full face, visible ears)
  • Include a signed declaration of consent to the nomination

The filing fee is GHC10,000 per candidate, with a reduced fee of GHC7,500 for female aspirants and persons with disabilities (PWDs).

The EC urged all stakeholders to adhere to the timelines and requirements, reaffirming its commitment to conducting a transparent, fair, and credible by-election. Enditem
