The Electoral Commission (EC) has announced it will hold a by-election in the Tamale Central Constituency on September 30th this year, according to a statement sighted by the Ghana Eye Report late Tuesday.
The statement signed by EC Chairperson Jean Mensa observed that the seat has become vacant following the death of the former Member of Parliament (MP) for the area, Hon. Murtala Muhammed Ibrahim.
“The Electoral Commission wishes to announce for the information of the general public that, following the unfortunate death of the Member of Parliament for the Tamale Central Constituency, Hon. Murtala Muhammed Ibrahim, the seat of the Constituency in Parliament has become vacant. In accordance with Article 112 (5) of the Constitution, as amended, the Electoral Commission will hold a by-election in the constituency on Tuesday, 30th September, 2025,” read the statement.
The EC has announced it will start receiving nominations from prospective candidates for the election of Member of Parliament for the said constituency from 8th to 10th September, 2025, between the hours of 9.00 am and 12.00 pm and 2.00 pm and 5.00 pm on each day.
The electoral management body also announced that the filing fee for the election is GH₵10,000 per candidate; however, female candidates and persons with disabilities are required to pay GH₵7,500.
Following the tragic passing of the former MP for the Tamale Central Constituency, the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has decided not to contest the seat on humanitarian grounds. Enditem
