EOCO investigating two active cases involving Springfield Energy

By Francis Kobena Tandoh

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) says it has commenced investigations into the activities of Springfield Energy, confirmed in a statement on Sunday.

A statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs on behalf of the Executive Director observed that it has two active investigations involving Springfield Energy.

EOCO’s statement comes on the back of an online report by NorvanReports claiming that the state agency has failed to act on a petition to investigate Kevin Okyere, Chief Executive Officer and promoter of Springfield Energy.

According to NorvanReports, EOCO’s alleged inaction compelled the petitioner, Swiss-based Petraco Oil Company SA, to file a case against GMP Energy Limited, a subsidiary of Springfield E&P, at the Dubai International Arbitration Centre (DIAC), which allegedly led to Mr. Okyere’s arrest and detention on Saturday, November 1.

However, EOCO, in its statement, described the report of the online news portal as false, explaining the cases it was investigating against Springfield Energy.

“The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has taken notice of a publication by online news portal ‘NorvanReport’ alleging that one Kevin Okyere, CEO and promoter of Springfield Energy, has been arrested and detained in Dubai following what the news portal claims is EOCO’s failure to act on a petition alleging defrauding by false pretense,” read the statement.

“Contrary to the claims made by NorvanReports, EOCO has two active investigations involving Springfield Energy. The first is a petition against Springfield Energy, and the second is an explosive case between BOST and Springfield Energy,” it added.

EOCO stressed that the case involving BOST and Springfield Energy is of priority to the anti-graft body due to its immediate impact on BOST’s finances and the local economy.

It expressed disappointment that NorvanReports did not seek clarification before publishing its story and assured the public of investigating and prosecuting economic and organized crimes in the country.

“EOCO assures the public that it is committed to investigating and prosecuting economic and organized crimes in Ghana, and we continue to work diligently to achieve our mandate,” it concluded. Enditem
