Ewurabena Aubynn secured a historic victory for the first time for the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Ablekuma North Constituency in a closely contested parliamentary rerun held on Friday.
This marks the first time since 1992 that the governing party has claimed the traditionally New Patriotic Party (NPP) held seat, following years of political dominance by the main opposition party.
The rerun, conducted in 19 polling stations, brought finality to almost six months of legal and electoral tussle since the December 7, 2024, general election.
According to the Electoral Commission (EC), NDC’s Ewurabena Aubynn polled 34,090 votes while NPP’s Akua Afriyie polled 33,881 votes.
That initial contest ended in a stalemate after allegations of irregularities and the submission of unauthenticated pink sheets led the Electoral Commission (EC) to withhold a final declaration for the parliamentary seat.
With the win, the governing party has 184 seats in parliament while the NPP’s stand at 87 following the demise of Akwatia MP, Ernest Yaw Kumi, on Monday. Enditem
