Five historical forts located at some towns along Ghana’s coastline have been temporarily shut down, the Ghana Museums and Monuments Board announced over the weekend in a statement.

The statement, signed by Acting Executive Director Kwesi Essel-Blankson, mentioned the forts as including Fort Apollonia, Fort St. Anthony, Fort Orange, James Fort, and Ussher Fort.

According to the statement, the rationale behind the closure is to enable renovation works to “preserve the structural integrity and historical value of these significant sites.”

“The Management and Board of Ghana Museums and Monuments Board (GMMB) wish to inform the general public, stakeholders, and wishers that Fort Apollonia (Benyin), Fort St. Anthony (Axim), Fort Orange (Sekondi), James Fort (Jamestown) and Ussher Fort (Usshertown) have been closed to the public effective Thursday, 18th December, 2025 until further notice,” read the statement.

“The decision has been taken to allow for essential maintenance work, safety assessments, and ongoing conservation activities aimed at preserving the structural integrity and historical value of these significant sites,” added the statement.

The GMMB apologised to its stakeholders for any inconvenience the closure may have caused. Enditem
