The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) began peace enforcement in Bawku and its environs, confirmed a statement released by the military command on Tuesday.
According to the statement signed by Va Arhin, Acting Director General in charge of Public Relations said that the peace enforcement has become necessary due to the widespread violence and reprisal attacks, and deaths in the area.
“The Ghana Armed Forces wishes to inform the general public that, following the directive by the President of the Republic and Commander-In-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, the Ghana Armed Forces has immediate effect, transitioned from peacekeeping to peace enforcement operations in the area of Bawku and its environs,” read the statement.
It added, “This transition to peace enforcement has become necessary due to the activities of armed elements that have intermittently resulted in violence, reprisal attacks, and innocent deaths, highlighting a dangerous pattern that threatens not only Bawku but also the peace and security of our dear nation.”
The GAF announced its operations during the period will include Bawku, Binduri, Nalerigu, and Zebilla, and the military says it will undertake robust and purposeful operations that would enhance community protection, while ensuring sanity returns to the affected areas.
According to the military, it will use all necessary force to restore law and order during its operations and calls on all citizens to adhere to law and order, including all agreed restrictions during the period.
The peace in Bawku, in the Upper East Region, and Nalerigu in the North-East Region is under threat owing to a chieftaincy dispute.
The government imposed a 2 pm to 6 am curfew at Nalerigu and evacuated students from Bawku and its environs after closing down schools in the area. Enditem
