The Ghana Bar Association (GBA) has urged a united front to fight the activities of illegal mining popularly referred to as ‘galamsey,’ according to a resolution by the association at the end of its 2025 mid-year conference held recently.

The resolution signed by its President, Mrs. Efua Ghartey, and National Secretary, Kwaku Gyau Baffour, condemned the practice.

According to the Association, the menace poses a grave threat to the country’s environment, water bodies, farmlands, and public health.

“The Ghana Bar Association unequivocally condemns the ongoing ‘galamsey’ activities across the country and calls for immediate, decisive, and sustained action by all arms of government, law enforcement agencies, and relevant stakeholders to eradicate the menace,” it said.

The GBA also called for speedy hearing of ‘galamsey’ cases to ensure that perpetrators were punished to serve as a deterrent to others.

“The Ghana Bar Association urges the Judiciary to prioritize and expedite the hearing of ‘galamsey ’- related cases, ensuring that offenders are held accountable in accordance with the law, without fear or favour,” it added.

The activities of illegal mining have caused so much destruction to arable lands, the environment, and polluted water bodies, among others.

Experts have warned that Ghana would soon import drinking water from other countries if the practice persisted. Enditem
