A 49-minute lone goal by Fenerbahçe star Alexander Djiku gave the Black Stars of Ghana a 1-0 win over the Eagles of Mali in matchday 8 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup African qualifier at the Accra Sports Stadium late Monday.

Djiku connected from a corner kick taken by Ghana captain Jordan Ayew four minutes into the second half of the game to score his first for the night and third international goal for his country.

With the win, Ghana thus opens a three-point gap on the league log in Group I with 19 points after eight matches, while Madagascar follows closely with 16 points, with Comoros occupying the third position with 15 points.

Mali, the Central African Republic (CAR), and Chad follow with 12, 5, and a point, respectively.

In the next round of the FIFA World Cup matches in October this year, Ghana will play the CAR away and host Comoros in the last match of the qualifiers.

Ghana is hoping to qualify for the next FIFA World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the USA after having participated in the 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2022 editions. End item
