Ghana bids farewell to the gallant eight in a solemn state funeral

The government and people of Ghana on Friday organized a solemn state funeral for the eight gallant Ghanaians who died in a military helicopter crash on August 6 at Sikaman, near the mining town of Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.

The state function brought together high-profile personalities, including President John Dramani Mahama, Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, as well as former Vice President Alhaji Dr. Mahamud Bawumia.

The ceremony, which was solemn, also had the Chief Imam, His Eminence Osman Nuhu Sharabutu, top clergymen of the Christian faith, as well as politicians from various political parties and people of all walks of life.

The Vice President, Speaker of Parliament, Council of State, families, spouses, and institutions of work read tributes to the eight individuals who lost their lives in the August 6 national tragedy.

A military helicopter crash early this month claimed the lives of eight people, including Defence Minister Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye, and National Democratic Congress (NDC) Vice Chairman Dr. Samuel Sarpong.

The three crew members who perished were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.

Two of the victims, Dr. Murtala Mohammed and Alhaji Muniru Limuna Mohammed, who were the Muslims among them, were buried in line with Islamic traditions at the military cemetery near Tesadd on Sunday.

The remaining six will also be buried at the same venue on Friday. Enditem
