Ghana is advancing forest conservation strategies with a focus on youth engagement, an official has said.
Hugh Brown, chief executive officer of the Ghana Forestry Commission, made the remarks on Wednesday during an inter-university debate held as part of activities marking the International Day of Forests.
He said involving young people in forest management helps mobilize broader participation in ecological protection and climate action.
The debate aims to raise awareness among youth about the importance of forests and the need for their protection, while fostering environmental responsibility, Brown said.
Noting the importance of forests extends far beyond generating income, employment, trade in renewable raw materials and food products, he said: “forests provide numerous ecological services such as conservation, soil protection, climate mitigation and maintaining agricultural productivity, while protecting headwaters and watersheds.”
Brown, therefore, called on the youth to turn awareness into concrete action to preserve and restore forests. Enditem
