The Ghana division final of the 24th “Chinese Bridge” Chinese proficiency contest was held on Friday in Cape Coast of Ghana’s Central Region, with many young talents capturing the hearts and minds of the audience.
The contest, hosted by the Confucius Institute at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), assembled students from the University of Ghana, the UCC, and the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, who showcased their Chinese language skills.
The contestants took written tests in Chinese and showcased their Chinese language skills through speeches, knowledge tests, and talent performances, including tongue twisters, voice dubbing, martial arts, singing, and dancing.
Godfred Takyi Boateng, a first-year Chinese language student at the UCC, became the overall winner and will represent Ghana in the global finals.
“What motivated me was my late mother, who introduced me to the world of Chinese. Unfortunately, she has passed away. She was a UCC student and a translator for over 20 years with fluency in English, Chinese, French, and Spanish,” Boateng told Xinhua in an interview.
He said learning Chinese is not only for competitions like this but also opens a doorway to many possibilities for Ghanaian youth.
In his remarks, Chinese Ambassador to Ghana Tong Defa thanked Ghanaian authorities for their immense support for the competition and pledged the Chinese embassy’s support for helping Ghanaian youth learn the Chinese language.
“The Chinese embassy will steadfastly support Ghana’s Chinese language education development, continue to support the daily work of the three Confucius Institutes in Ghana, and provide the Chinese ambassador’s scholarship and Chinese government scholarship for outstanding Ghanaian students,” he said.
