Ghana police interdict officer for assaulting journalist in Ablekuma north parliamentary rerun

Police authorities in Ghana on Friday interdicted an officer captured in a viral video assaulting a journalist during a parliamentary election rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency, a suburb of the national capital, Accra, according to a statement.

The statement signed by Richmond Mensah, Assistant Superintendent of Police for the Director of Public Affairs, observed that the said officer has been referred to the Police Professional Standards Bureau (PPSB) for investigations.

“The Ghana Police Service has monitored a viral video in which one of our officers is seen assaulting a reporter. The officer concerned has been withdrawn from the ongoing election duty at Ablekuma North, and in line with internal disciplinary procedures, he has been interdicted and referred to the police professional standards bureau for investigation,” said the statement.

The Ghanaian police assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted into the matter and provided further updates in due course.

Following a dispute in the Dec. 7, 2024, parliamentary election, the country’s electoral management body is re-conducting elections in 19 out of the 62 polling stations in the constituency. Enditem
