Ghana Water Limited commences Weija dam spillage, residents urged to evacuate

By Francis Kobena Tandoh

The Management of Ghana Water Limited (GWL) commenced the spillage of excess water from the Weija Dam, according to a statement on Friday.

The statement, signed by Head of Communications, Stanley Martey, said the spillage is due to the onset of the raining season and urged the public, especially residents living downstream to as a matter of urgency evacuate immediately to avoid any potential disaster.

According to GWL, the current water level at the Weija Dam is 45 feet, just two feet shy of its maximum safe operating level of 47 feet. Officials say the water level is rising steadily and is being monitored hourly. As a safety measure to protect the structural integrity of the dam and prevent flooding-related disasters, GWL has begun minimal spillage of excess water.

“With the onset of the raining season, Management of Ghana Water Limited hereby informs the public, especially residents living downstream of the Weija Dam that spillage of excess water from the dam has commenced,” said the statement.

“The Management of GWL is by this release sounding a word of caution to the inhabitants downstream to evacuate the area to forestall any eventuality,” it added.

Among communities likely to be affected by the spillage include Tetegu, Oblogo, Pambros Salt and the Lower McCarthy Hill.

The rest are Lower Weija, Bojo Beach, as well as Adakope and surrounding areas.

GWL has also advised the Ga West Municipal Assembly to desilt the estuary and clear refuse along the course of the river to allow unimpeded flow of excess water into the sea.

The company further stated that it has informed key stakeholders, including the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), National Security, Traditional authorities of Weija, Oblogo, Tetegu, and Gbawe, opinion leaders, institutions and organizations with properties in the affected areas.

The statement emphasized the need for cooperation from the public, urging residents to comply fully with safety instructions issued by NADMO and the municipal assemblies.

“We kindly request that all affected residents remain cooperative and adhere to any safety instructions issued by the municipal assembly to ensure their safety and prevent any untoward incidents,” the statement read.

GWL announced it is taking proactive steps to prevent a repeat of past flood-related disasters. Enditem
