The Black Stars of Ghana defeated the Les Fauves of Central African Republic (CAR) 5-0 in match day nine of the African qualifiers of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at the Stade d’Honneur de Meknes in Morocco on Wednesday.
Ghana, determined to pick all three points to ensure they pick the only ticket from Group I to qualify for the World Cup, began the game on a good note, putting pressure on their opponents.
The West Africans broke the deadlock after just 20 minutes when defender Mohammed Salisu rose highest to head home a perfectly delivered corner kick from Mohammed Kudus to keep the score line at 1-0 till the end of the first half.
Back from recess, the Ghanaians continued their dominance and scored the second of the day through Villarreal midfielder, Thomas Partey in the 52nd minute.
The Black Stars continued to press forward with confidence, and in the 69th minute, Alexander Djiku made it 3-0, heading home Ayew’s precise cross.
Ghana captain and Leicester City forward Jordan Ayew scored the fourth goal in the 71st minute substitute Kamaldeen Sulemana put the icing on the cake with a fine finish three minutes to the of the game, registering his first international goal after a clever assist from Joseph Paintsil.
The win leaves Ghana still on top of the league log in Group I with 22 points and a goal difference of 16 after nine matches, with Madagascar occupying second position with 19 points and a goal difference of seven.
Comoros, Mali, and CAR follow with 15, 12, and 5 points, respectively, while Chad lies at the bottom of the log with a point.
Ghana will play the final match of the qualifiers against Comoros at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, where they could secure qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the U.S.A. Enditem
