Ghanaian president cancels fuel allocation to political appointees

Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has introduced a new cost-cutting measure by canceling fuel allowances and fuel allocations for political appointees, a release said on Tuesday.

The president believes leadership must also bear its part of sacrifices under broad measures introduced by the government to reduce public expenditure and channel funds into priority areas, according to the statement.

Since coming to power in January, Mahama has introduced measures to reduce public expenditure, including limiting ministerial appointees to 60, about half the number appointed by his predecessor.

The West African cocoa, gold, and crude oil exporter has been implementing a 36-month reform program since May 2023, backed by an International Monetary Fund loan of 3 billion U.S. dollars, to manage systemic challenges in the economy, including budget overruns, ballooning public debts, unstable inflation, and exchange rate volatilities.  Enditem
