The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) is commencing a nationwide operation on Thursday to ensure all vehicles on the road are equipped with fire extinguishers, according to a statement released here.
The statement, signed by Desmond E. Ackah, Divisional Officer II (DO II), announced that the operation will be led by the GNFS Fire Safety Compliance Taskforce in collaboration with the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service.
According to the statement, the GNFS Safety Compliance Taskforce is mandated to perform the following functions, including conducting on-the-spot fire safety checks on all vehicles, issuing GNFS certification tags for effective fire extinguishers, and providing technical advice on fire extinguisher use and compliance as stipulated.
As part of the exercise, the GNFS, according to the statement, is engaging transport unions and associations across the country to emphasise the need for drivers and vehicle owners to procure and carry at least one functional fire extinguisher certified by the GNFS, among others.
The GNFS expressed its commitment towards enhancing the safety on the road across the country through intensified public education on vehicular fire prevention and firm enforcement measures. Enditem
