The government of Ghana has reduced the budget of the country’s senior national football team, the Black Stars, from $ 1.2 million to $ 841,290, Sports Minister Kofi Iddie Adams confirmed on Tuesday.
Addressing a press conference in the national capital, the minister observed that the new administration has introduced a system where the budgets submitted by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) are subjected to strict scrutiny before forwarding them to the presidency for approval.
He said, “Previously, all budget estimates presented by the GFA were approved without any cutdowns,” explaining that “the new system of review is in line with President John Mahama’s directive to ensure transparency and accountability in the financing of national teams.”
His comments come in the wake of a significant downward revision of the Black Stars’ budget for the World Cup qualifier against Chad on September 4, where the proposed spending of $1.2 million was reduced to $841,290.
The Black Stars left Accra for Chad on Tuesday, where they will play against the Central African country in matchday 7 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier away in N’Djamena on Sept. 4 before hosting Mali in Accra four days later.
Ghana tops the Group I league log with 15 points and is hoping to obtain good results from the two matches to put themselves in a position to qualify for the 2026 World Cup. End item
