Gov’t forces repel “large-scale” terror attack in NE Nigeria

Nigerian government forces recently repelled a heavy attack by suspected terrorists in the northeastern state of Borno, killing several fighters, the army said Tuesday.

“Troops of Operation HADIN KAI in Bitta successfully foiled a large-scale JAS/ISWAP terrorist attack at about 10:25 p.m. on July 27,” the Nigerian Army said in a statement posted on social media platform X.

The army said suspected terrorists, advancing from the Damboa axis to invade Bitta, a town in the Gwoza local government area, briefly breached the outer defensive perimeter but were swiftly overpowered following a fierce gunfight with troops on Saturday night.

The army described the attack as “large-scale,” saying the troops, while overpowering the suspected terrorists, killed several of them in the encounter. It, however, did not provide a specific figure for the casualties.

In a follow-up assessment, senior military commanders reorganized and remobilized troops to fortify the area and maintain high operational alertness, the army statement added.

The Boko Haram has been collaborating with the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) in an attempt to establish an Islamist state in northeast Nigeria. The terror groups have also extended their attacks to other countries in the Lake Chad Basin.  Enditem
