By Francis Kobena Tandoh

The Greater Accra Regional Chairman for the National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), Henry Teitey Tetteh-Afi Esq., on Monday urged newly elected executives for the Tema Zone to advance the course of their members.

Speaking at the NAGRAT Zonal Conference at the Chemu Senior High Technical School, he emphasized that the work that the new executives have taken upon themselves was highly sacrificial and that they were to do their best to serve their members.

According to him, the new positions that the executives have found themselves in come along with networking opportunities that they can leverage for their future endeavors.

“I would like to emphasize the importance of unity as crucial for the work that you have taken upon yourselves. This work is highly sacrificial, so don’t expect monetary gains, but what I can tell you is that it gives you networking opportunities because you will be meeting several personalities in the society,” said Mr. Tetteh-Afi.

The Greater Accra NAGRAT Chairman outlined some notable achievements the union has chalked up in its years of existence, such as being the first union in Ghana to go paperless in its operations and establishing a regional fund to promote the welfare of members, and urged those who have not enrolled in it to do so.

He also mentioned that the association has been organizing training workshops both in person and online for members prior to writing their promotion exams on a yearly basis.

Mr. Tetteh-Afi disclosed that NAGRAT has entered into a partnership with an information technology (IT) firm under which members will be trained and equipped with information, communication, and technology (ICT) to be abreast with modern teaching methodology.

In order to help members to upgrade themselves academically, the union, he emphasized, has teamed up with the Methodist University for their members to pursue master’ programs at a 30 percent discount.

He advised teachers to take time to plan their retirement now that they are in active service in order not to encounter financial challenges when they go on pension.

Speaking on the conference theme, “Ensuring Teacher Safety and Promoting Positive Discipline in Ghanaian Schools: The Role of Stakeholders,” a former chairman for the Tema Zone, Mr. Ebenezer Ken Nana Eshun, emphasized the need for the introduction of good policies that offered adequate protection for teachers to enable them to mold and impart knowledge to their learners.

Mr. Eshun also emphasized the need for open communication among administrators, teachers, and students, as well as empathy for learners.

As part of the conference, new executives, including Joseph Samuel Amoako (Chairman), Edna Odonkor (Secretary), Eric Yaw Essel (Finance Officer), and Winifred Owusu Sekyere (Gender Desk Coordinator), were elected to serve a four-year term.

Newly elected Chairman, Mr. Joseph Samuel Amoako, on behalf of his team, assured them they will have integrity, transparency, and commitment to serve the interest of their members.

Per the revised NAGRAT Constitution, the new executives will commence their term on January 1st, 2026.

The Tema NAGRAT Conference was attended by some executives from the region as well as other zones, including Ashaiman, Ga West, La Dadekotopon, and Ada East. Enditem
