Athletic Club’s 3-1 win over Qarabag in the Champions League on Wednesday night has come at a price with the club confirming that Ghana international forward Inaki Williams suffered a groin injury.
Williams was forced off the field in the 38th minute when Athletic trailed 1-0, and was replaced by Alex Berenguer. Goals from Gorka Guruzeta and Robert Navarro, who came on for Williams’ younger brother Nico, secured Athletic’s first Champions League win of the campaign.
“The captain was brought off during the first half of Wednesday’s Champions League fixture after suffering an injury to the adductor muscles in his right leg.”
“The No. 9 will begin his recovery process shortly and his progress will be closely monitored,” informed the Athletic website.
Though the club did not provide a timeline for Williams’s return, sports paper Diario AS estimates he will be sidelined for two to three weeks. This means he will miss the upcoming La Liga game at home against Getafe, the first Basque derby away to Real Sociedad, and Athletic’s Champions League match against Newcastle United.
The forward had just returned from a thigh injury that forced him to withdraw from the Ghana squad earlier this month. He joins long-term absentees Benat Prados and Eguiluz on Athletic’s injury list. Enditem
