The High Court (Criminal Division) in Accra on Thursday dismissed an application by former Finance Minister Kenneth Ofori-Atta seeking to strike out a warrant issued for his arrest by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP).
Mr. Ofori-Atta had argued that the OSP unlawfully obtained the warrant and asked the court to set aside all related proceedings, including an Interpol Red Notice alert. However, the court on July 31, 2025, ruled that the application lacked merit and dismissed it in its entirety.
It would be recalled that the OSP formally notified Ken Ofori‑Atta that he was a suspect in multiple corruption investigations and was required to appear in person in Ghana by February 10, 2025.
The former Finance Minister’s legal team claimed he was outside Ghana indefinitely due to medical reasons and proposed remote cooperation, which the OSP rejected.
Ofori‑Atta submitted a generic medical letter from overseas; the OSP found it insufficient, declared him a fugitive from justice, and obtained an arrest warrant on February 12, 2025, for the charge of “using public office for profit.”
On February 18, 2025, Ofori‑Atta communicated a firm intention to return voluntarily in May. The OSP removed him from the wanted list in response, pending his voluntary appearance by June 2, 2025.
However, Mr. Ofori‑Atta missed the June 2, 2025, scheduled attendance. The OSP reinstated his status as a wanted person and requested an INTERPOL Red Notice, which was formally issued between June 5-6, 2025. Enditem
