“I won’t trade my body for fame” — Hadiza Abubakar speaks on Nollywood’s casting couch scandal

Nollywood actress Hadiza Abubakar has come out strongly against the persistent allegations of “sex-for-roles” within the Nigerian film industry, declaring that she has never — and will never — compromise her integrity for career advancement.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Oyinmomo TV, the rising star addressed the issue head-on, dismissing any suggestion that she earned roles through inappropriate means.

“No director, actor, producer, or marketer can come out and say, ‘I slept with Hadiza Abubakar to give her a movie role,’” she stated boldly. “The time marketers should use to grow talents, they’re busy demanding sex in exchange for roles. I refuse to be a victim of that system.”

Hadiza also shared a deeply personal story from her early days in the industry, recalling a humiliating experience that eventually led to an act of kindness from her mother.

“There was a time I needed a lift, and someone told me I had to buy fuel before they could carry me — even though we were going in the same direction. That hurt,” she said. “When I told my mum, she quietly used some money she had kept to buy me my first car — an SUV.”

She noted that the vehicle eventually became a blessing not just for her, but also for colleagues on set. “I used it to help transport my fellow actors. It’s not a big deal. These material things — we met them here on earth,” she added philosophically.

Hadiza’s stance comes at a time when the casting couch culture continues to be a troubling conversation in Nollywood. Her outspokenness adds to the growing chorus of voices demanding accountability, fairness, and professionalism in the entertainment industry. Enditem
