The International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) has permanently removed the Red Notice (alert) issued at the request of Ghana’s Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) against former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.
The decision follows a detailed legal review by the Commission for the Control of INTERPOL’s Files (CCF).
According to Ofori-Atta’s legal team, the decision came after the CCF found that the notice did not meet INTERPOL’s legal and constitutional requirements, including protections against politically motivated actions and violations of fundamental human rights. As a result, the alert was fully deleted, not merely suspended or temporarily hidden from public view.
Key points:
- INTERPOL concluded that the conditions for publishing and maintaining the Red Notice were not satisfied.
- The removal followed a formal legal challenge filed by Ofori-Atta’s lawyers.
- The decision effectively blocks any future reactivation of the same notice based on the earlier request.
- Ofori-Atta’s lawyers accused the OSP of misleading the public by earlier suggesting the removal was only temporary.
This development marks a major legal and political setback for the OSP, and is likely to intensify debate over the handling of high-profile corruption investigations in Ghana. Enditem
