Kenya Airways, the national flag carrier, said on Monday that airlines in Africa should collaborate to boost revenue and unlock the continent’s aviation potential.
Allan Kilavuka, chief executive officer of Kenya Airways, told journalists in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi that cooperation among airlines can help reduce overall unit costs.
“African carriers are very small compared to global peers and should collaborate rather than compete to ensure profitability,” Kilavuka said.
He revealed that Kenya Airways has established the Pan-African Airline Group and initiated informal discussions with other African carriers interested in consolidation to achieve economies of scale.
He noted that West and East Africa previously had regional airlines that helped address the challenge of fragmented air transport markets.
Kilavuka added that African airlines should form strategic partnerships to reduce air travel costs across the continent. Enditem
