Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams, has sent a congratulatory message to Ghana’s senior women’s national football team, the Black Queens, for qualifying for the semi-finals of the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco, according to a statement on Sunday.

The statement, signed by Minister for Sports and Recreation Kofi Iddie Adams, noted that the feat is quite remarkable, given that it came after almost nine years of failing to qualify for the semi-finals of the tournament.

“On behalf of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation and the government of Ghana, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the Black Queens on qualifying for the semi-finals of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. This is the first time since 2016 that Ghana has reached this stage, and it is a proud moment for all of us,” said Adams.

“This achievement reflects your discipline, composure, and the strength of your collective spirit. The journey through the group stage was without challenges, but you remained focused, built confidence with every match, and showed the quality and resilience worthy of your name,” added the sports and recreation minister.

He assured the team of the government’s continued support and urged them to stay united for the task ahead and work hard to achieve the ultimate.

The Black Queens secured their place in the semi-finals of the TotalEnergies CAF WAFOCN after a dramatic 4-2 penalty shootout over Algeria on Saturday, following a goalless draw after extra time at Stade Mohamed V stadium in Casablanca.

Ghana will face hosts Morocco in the semifinals at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat on Tuesday. Enditem
