Minister for Sports & Recreation, Kofi Iddie Adams has received the report of the committee of inquiry set up to investigate the death of a Nigerian boxer in the ring in Ghana early this year, according to a statement on Friday.

According to the statement issued by the public relations unit of the Ministry of Sports & Recreation, the report unraveled the circumstances leading to the death and recommendations to prevent a recurrence.

“The Ministry of Sports & Recreation wishes to inform the public that the committee of inquiry constituted to investigate the tragic death of boxer Gabriel Oluwasegun Olanrewaju has officially submitted its report,” read the statement.

“The report, which has been handed over to the minister, contains key findings and actionable recommendations aimed at preventing such incidents in the future,” it added.

The Ghanaian sports minister, according to the statement, has engaged the country’s national sports authority on the report and accepted the findings and recommendations.

The ministry has subsequently assured the public and the international community that the recommendations of the committee and necessary reforms would be implemented through various activities and programs to be rolled out in the coming days.

Nigerian boxer Olanrewaju collapsed in the ring and was pronounced dead subsequently during a bout with his Ghanaian counterpart on the midnight of March 29.

On April 8, Ghanaian Sports & Recreation Minister Kofi Iddie Adams set up a committee to “ascertain the circumstances surrounding the boxer’s death and to identify any gaps in safety protocols, medical response, or regulatory compliance.” Enditem
