Member of Parliament (MP) for Bawku Central, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, on Friday agreed to withdraw his controversial private member’s bill seeking to abolish the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), following a direct request from former President John Dramani Mahama.
The decision comes after days of intense public debate over the bill, which aimed to repeal the law establishing the OSP, an institution created to strengthen Ghana’s anti-corruption framework.
Sources within the Minority Caucus indicate that former President Mahama urged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) legislator to step back from the proposal to prevent further public misunderstanding and to maintain confidence in the party’s commitment to fighting corruption.
The President reportedly expressed concern that the bill’s timing and intent were being misinterpreted, potentially fueling unnecessary political controversy.
Mahama Ayariga, who had earlier defended the bill as a necessary step to restructure Ghana’s anti-corruption institutions, is expected to formally communicate the withdrawal to Parliament in the coming days.
The debate over the future of the OSP intensified recently following public disagreements, investigations, and calls by some political actors for reforms within the institution.
Ayariga’s now-withdrawn bill was the latest development in the ongoing national conversation about the effectiveness and independence of the OSP. Enditem
