President John Mahama has dispatched the deployment of additional police and military to his home region, Savanah, to restore calm and end ethnic clashes between the Brifos and Gonjas that have claimed 18 lives, according to a statement on Sunday.
The statement signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, observed that the Interior Minister is also leading a high-powered delegation to meet with traditional and opinion leaders to discuss steps at ending the conflict.
“President John Dramani Mahama has received a briefing from the National Security Coordinator and the Minister for the Interior on the developments in the Sawla-Bole area of the Savanah region. Security has been reinforced with the deployment of an additional detachment of police and military personnel to the area,” said the statement.
It added, “As part of this peace-building effort, he had dispatched a government delegation, led by Minister for the Interior Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, to meet with the Yagbonwura, or paramount chief, and other key stakeholders of the area.”
The Ghanaian government urged all parties in the disputed area to support initiatives underway to end the conflict and restore normalcy.
Violent clashes between two ethnic groups, the Brifos and Gonjas, about a week ago over a disputed land have claimed almost 20 lives, injured hundreds, and displaced over 1,000, while farms, markets, and businesses remain abandoned or destroyed.
Communities have also been deserted, severely affected, affecting livelihoods and the local economy. Enditem
