President John Dramani Mahama on Wednesday forwarded a detailed report on electoral violence during the 2020 and 2024 general elections to the country’s Attorney General Dominic Ayine for legal review and advice, according to the presidency.
The report, compiled by Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno, documents shootings and clashes between party supporters and security forces during the two general elections.
These disturbances led to multiple fatalities and injuries across several constituencies. Eight people were reportedly killed during the 2020 elections, while three others lost their lives in the 2024 polls.
President Mahama is seeking legal guidance on how best to prosecute those responsible or involved in the violence and determine appropriate legal and institutional measures to both ensure justice for victims and prevent future recurrence in the West African country.
This marks a significant step toward accountability, reinforcing the government’s expressed commitment to upholding the rule of law and restoring confidence in Ghana’s democratic institutions.
This move comes amid sustained public pressure from civil society for transparency and justice in the wake of Ghana’s most recent polls.
Prior to the country’s 2024 general election, President Mahama promised to launch a full-scale investigation into the violence that characterized the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections. Enditem
