The Minority Caucus in Ghana’s Parliament is backing the political parties’ nationwide demonstration on May 5 against the suspension of the Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, by the president, this is according to a statement issued on Wednesday.

The statement signed by Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, observed that there is so much tension in the country due to the suspension of the Chief Justice and the termination of appointments of public servants.

According to the Minority Caucus, the decision to throw its weight behind the course of the political parties is borne out of the desire to defend the country’s fledgling democracy.

“This country is indeed tense over the recent suspension of Ghana’s Chief Justice and the politically motivated termination of appointments of public civil servants. To this, the Minority Caucus in Parliament stands in firm solidarity with the political parties who have called for a nationwide demonstration on Monday, May 5, 2025, to defend our democracy,” said the statement.

The Minority Caucus stated that the decision to suspend the Chief Justice and the ultimate removal is part of a clandestine attempt being made to pave a third-term bid for the president, John Mahama.

“The concerns that the blatant disregard for legal processes and the growing trend of judicial intimidation, as witnessed in the Chief Justice’s suspension, represent a direct assault on the progress made in our legacy of democratic governance and rule of law. Be it an attempt to create an environment to conveniently reinterpret Article 66(2) of the Constitution to pave the way for a third-term presidential bid by President Mahama. Such orchestrations are a clear abuse of the power and trust the people of Ghana place in the hands of the executive,” it added.

Some opposition political parties, including the New Patriotic Party (NPP), the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), the National Democratic Party (NDP), the People’s National Party (PNP), and others will be demonstrating next week to draw the attention of the nation and the international community to happenings within the country since the Mahama-led administration took office.
