The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Members of Parliament staged a walkout of Parliament on Thursday over the continuous detention of Ashanti Regional Chairman of the party, Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, also known as Chairman Wontumi, in the custody of the Economic and Organised Crimes Office (EOCO).
Antwi-Boasiako was arrested by EOCO on Tuesday after he was leaving the premises of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for questioning.
Andy Appiah Kubi, one of his lawyers, confirmed to the media that his client is being investigated on allegations of causing financial loss to the state.
He was subsequently granted bail of 50 million Ghana cedis with two sureties, both to be justified
The NPP Regional, however, spent the night behind bars at the EOCO headquarters in the national capital after failing to meet the full bail conditions.
Minority Leader, Alexander Kwamena Afenyo-Markin, declared that the NPP parliamentarians will boycott all proceedings of the House until the EOCO reviews and varies the bail conditions of Chairman Wontumi and releases him from custody.
“The NPP side, however, our numbers, we will protest by absenting ourselves from the proceedings of the House,” said Afenyo-Markin.
“Mr. Speakers, they (EOCO) must do the right thing, and we will not be part of any proceedings until the right thing is done,” added the Minority Leader.
He urged parliamentarians on the other side of the House to stand in solidarity with the Minority to uphold the rule of law and safeguard the country’s democracy. Enditem
