Mozambican President Daniel Chapo opened the 14th Ordinary Session of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP) Parliamentary Assembly on Monday in Maputo, calling for greater unity, inclusive governance, and enhanced mobility among CPLP members.
He said Mozambique’s two-year presidency will focus on strengthening democracy, the rule of law, and advancing the mobility agreement to facilitate free movement of citizens and deepen shared identity.
Chapo described the CPLP as not only a “community of affection” but also one of “responsibility and solidarity,” urging members to reflect on progress and challenges to make the organization a stronger global voice.
He reaffirmed Mozambique’s commitment to youth, gender equality, education, health, and infrastructure as foundations for democratic and sustainable development.
“We want this to be a space of renewed commitments and transformative decisions,” Chapo said. “Let it be remembered as a moment of convergence, where the will to serve rose above any particular or group interest.”
He called for joint action on global issues such as climate change, food security, and cultural diversity.
Representatives from all CPLP member states, including Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Equatorial Guinea, Portugal, Sao Tome and Principe, and East Timor, attended the session in Maputo. Enditem
