The governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) is holding its party primary on Saturday, September 6, 2025, to elect a parliamentary candidate for the Tamale Central Constituency.
This internal election precedes a by-election scheduled for Tuesday, September 30, 2025, to fill the parliamentary seat left vacant after the tragic death of the sitting Member of Parliament (MP), Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, who died in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025.
12 aspirants have been cleared by the party leadership to contest the primary in the constituency.
The candidates contesting include Professor Seidu Mahama Alidu (University of Ghana), who emphasizes youth empowerment and rebranding Tamale Central; Abdul-Rahaman Hanan Gundadow (former MCE of Tamale), known for his grassroots ties and project delivery; and Dr. Seidu Mohammed Fiter (UDS lecturer), who advocates for strong community development credentials.
Other contenders include Mariama Naama Salifu, Dr. Rahman Abdul Rashid, Dr. Aliu Abdul Hamid, Prof. Razak Abubakari, Alhaji Alhassan Nbalba, Hajia Muliaka Sualisu, Sadat Harun Alhassan, Alhassan Osman Gomda, and Hajia Shamima Yakubu.
Political analysts see the real battle as a showdown between Prof. Alidu and Mr. Gundadow, with traditional leaders and internal party dynamics expected to influence outcomes.
The polls, according to the party leadership, are expected to open from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and there are four ballot boxes, each designated for specific electoral areas within the constituency.
Delegates must have QR-code-enabled ID tags and provide additional identification such as a voter ID, Ghana card, or party membership card.
Mobile phones, according to the electoral rules as stipulated by the party, are not allowed inside the voting booth, while candidates are prohibited from transporting delegates or campaigning at the venue.
Approximately 250 joint security officers have been deployed to ensure peace and order in the constituency, and observers are allowed only in the supporters’ stands unless they have been specifically accredited.
Each candidate contesting the primary may appoint up to four agents per ballot box, but only one agent per box can sign the final collation sheet.
Additionally, two accredited representatives per candidate are permitted to enter the inner perimeter of the venue.
The candidate to be elected by the party will contest the parliamentary by-election on the ticket of the governing NDC.
Meanwhile, the main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has decided it will not be contesting the parliamentary by-election in the Tamale Central Constituency on humanitarian grounds. Enditem
