Fire gutted the China City Mall at Santasi in Kumasi, capital of the Ashanti Region on Thursday bringing down the entire building and destroying goods running into thousands of Ghana cedis.

According to reports by our correspondent, the fire, which started around 3 p.m, engulfed the commercial facility, bringing everything down.

The cause of the fire, according to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) is yet to be determined, but preliminary reports suggest it may have started from the rear section of the building before spreading rapidly throughout.

“We received a distress call about the fire and dispatched two fire tenders to the scene immediately. Our men have been working tirelessly to contain the blaze,” a GNFS officer told journalists.

The intensity of the fire, eyewitnesses say could be as a result of combustible materials in the facility making it difficult for the fire personnel.

Despite the firefighters’ efforts, the fire consumed the entire building, which housed various shops dealing in home accessories, electronics, and groceries.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) reports no casualties have been reported so far.

The mall, which opened earlier in 2025, had become a popular shopping destination for residents of Kumasi and surrounding communities.

The GNFS has commenced investigations into Thursday’s inferno to determine the exact cause of the fire and assess the extent of the damage. Enditem
