The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Minority in Parliament on Tuesday opposed the nomination of seven justices to the Supreme Court by President John Dramani Mahama.
According to the Minority Caucus, the nominations undermine constitutional order and judicial independence, particularly given the Supreme Court’s failure to act during earlier breaches of natural justice, including the suspension of the Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo.
Addressing Parliament during the debate on the Appointments Committee’s report, Ranking Member on the Constitutional and Legal Affairs Committee, Kwame Anyimadu-Antwi, warned that the development sets a dangerous precedent for future judicial nominations.
“It’s not that the justices are not competent, we do not doubt their competence, but Mr Speaker, it’s flooding the box. This is the first time we are having 7 justices at a time…This is unprecedented, it has never happened in the country, and this must not be allowed,” said Anyimadu-Antwi.
Despite the Minority’s position, the governing party used their numbers in Parliament to approve the nomination of the justices.
The president is expected to swear-in the new justices before assuming office at the Supreme Court. Enditem
