NPP National Chairmanship: John Boadu declares intention to contest

By Francis Kobena Tandoh

Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), John Boadu, has declared his intention to contest the position of National Chairman if the party opens nominations for national leadership elections in 2026, according to a statement on Saturday.

Mr. Boadu said his decision followed broad consultations with party elders, executives, and grassroots members across the country.

The NPP is at a “critical crossroads” following its defeat in the 2024 general elections and needs “experienced, tested, and unifying leadership” to rebuild and return to power in 2028.

According to him, the party has lost touch with key stakeholder groups, including the youth, the business community, the middle class, the clergy, and academia, a situation he described as deeply worrying.

“Our party has drifted away from vital groups that once proudly carried the NPP flag,” he said.

“We cannot afford to remain in opposition for long. There is hope for restoration, but that hope rests in leadership with proven experience and the capacity to deliver results.”

He promised to focus his campaign on five key pillars: reconciliation and unity, rebuilding and rebranding the party, strengthening internal structures and security, sustainable resource mobilization, and modernizing campaign strategies using technology and data.

“The NPP needs to be rescued; power is won when the party is strong and guided by tried and tested leadership. This is not a time for experiments,” the former NPP General Secretary added.

Outlining his record, the former General Secretary highlighted his over 30 years of service in the party, rising through the ranks from polling station chairman to the highest administrative position in the NPP.

He also touted several achievements under his tenure, including leading the NPP to secure its highest electoral votes, 6.7 million in 2020, and the party’s largest parliamentary majority in 2016.

Mr. Boadu stated that the next general elections in Ghana would be crucial for the NPP’s survival, calling for unity and discipline among party members.

“At this decisive moment, we cannot afford to gamble with leadership; the NPP needs stability, tolerance, and a results-oriented vision that will unite all factions and restore our great party to power,” added Mr. Boadu.

Even though the party is yet to open nominations for the national chairmanship position, some notable persons including former Energy Minister Boakye Agyarko, former Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs Minister Stephen Asamoah Boateng and former NPP National Chairman, Paul Afoko have declared their intention to contest the position.
