The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has scheduled a formal programme to announce and outdoor the winner of the presidential primary on Saturday, according to the party on Wednesday.
The party has been outlining its plan and programme following its presidential primaries process as the party transitions from internal elections toward rebuilding and preparing for the 2028 general elections:
According to the party, after the close of polls on the January 31 election, there will be an official declaration of results and presentation of the candidate to the people from 3.00 p.m. at the party’s headquarters in the national capital.
The flagbearer, the party noted, will then address party members and supporters, which kickstarts the party’s unified campaign journey towards the general election in 2028.
In the wake of its 2024 general election defeat, the NPP leadership has signalled a broader strategy beyond just electing a flagbearer, aimed at rejuvenating the party, reconnecting with grassroots members through nationwide engagements and feedback loops and strengthening internal structures and networks, especially at polling station and constituency levels, to rebuild organisational capacity.
The rest are encouraging internal unity and overcoming divisions generated during the primary contest, with supporters and party elders urging cohesion behind the flagbearer to come.
These efforts are part of a longer-term strategic push to position the NPP as a competitive force ahead of the next national polls.
Several programme elements have been highlighted ahead of and anticipated after the primaries:
Welfare initiatives for party members and delegates have been proposed, such as establishing dedicated welfare support desks at all party levels to ensure equitable distribution of opportunities and support to grassroots functionaries.
Capacity-building and communication strengthening — including training for party communicators and enhanced engagement strategies — are being talked about in party commentary as necessary for future success.
Emphasis on policy engagement and public outreach as the party seeks to reconnect with the broader Ghanaian electorate.
These reflect a programme of internal renewal and external engagement meant to keep the party grounded while broadening its appeal.
Ultimately, the NPP’s post-primaries programme is building toward its campaign for the 2028 presidential and parliamentary elections. This includes mobilising grassroots support and expanding delegate bases, uniting behind the chosen flagbearer, and crafting policy positions and vision messages that resonate with voters nationwide ahead of the next general elections.
