The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) will contest the Ayawaso East Constituency by-election if the country’s electoral management body comes up with the notice of an election, General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong said on Wednesday.

According to him, the NPP has begun looking for a suitable candidate who will be able to win the seat from the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Since his demise, some have called on the NPP not to contest the seat and allow the NDC contest alone.

But Justin Kodua emphasized that the NPP’s resolve to contest the by-election is the same as the reasons that informed the governing NDC to contest the Akwatia Constituency seat when the then sitting MP Ernest Yaw Kumi passed on.

“The NPP will contest the Ayawaso East by-election when the seat when the Electoral Commission initiates the process. We are now looking for a suitable candidate to win the election,” said the General Secretary.

Member of Parliament (MP) for Ayawaso East, Mahama Naser Toure, passed away at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital on Jan. 4 after a period of illness.

A fourth-term MP, Toure held several key roles in Parliament, including Vice Chairman of the Energy Committee, and membership on the Roads and Transport Committee, House Committee, and the Private Members’ Bills and Motions Committee.

Justin Kodua extended his condolences to the family of the former parliamentarian. Enditem
