Former Minister for Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, this is according to a statement from his medical team.

The statement signed by Ahmed Abdalrhim, M.D., FACP, FSVM Section of International Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota, a surgical attention is necessary and that Ofori-Atta is scheduled to go through that procedure on June 13 this year.

Due to the surgical procedure, the former Finance Minister will require some period for recovery hence unable to return to his home country anytime soon, according to his medical team.

“I am writing to inform you that Mr. Ofori-Atta has undergone an MR-guided Biopsy and has been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer. A surgical intervention has been deemed necessary, after the testing and MRI and Biopsy procedures in March 2025. The surgical procedure has been scheduled for June 13 with Dr. Paras Shah of the Department of Urology,” read the statement.

“Following the procedure, Mr. Ofori-Atta will require a recovery period before he is able to travel to his home country,” added the statement

Ofori-Atta was declared a wanted person by the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) on Monday after missing the June 2 deadline.

This decisive action follows his failure to appear in person at the OSP’s headquarters by the stipulated deadline, violating an earlier agreement that saw his temporary removal from the wanted list.

The OSP declared Ofori-Atta a “fugitive from justice” in February 2025, citing his repeated non-compliance with summons for questioning regarding multiple corruption allegations.

According to the OSP, the issues being probed include his involvement in contracts with Strategic Mobilisation Ghana Limited (SML) for revenue assurance, issues surrounding the National Cathedral project, and other financial dealings during his tenure as Finance Minister between 2017 and 2024.
