In its efforts to rid the streets of Ghana of street begging and unscrupulous persons, a total of 2,241 foreign beggars were picked up from various strategic locations in the Ghanaian capital of Accra, the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) announced Friday.
The early morning operation resulted in the arrest of 384 adult males, 525 adult females, 577 male children, and 755 female children from eleven locations across the capital.
Michael Amoako-Atta, Head of Public Relations at the GIS, told the media in a press briefing that buses have been made available to repatriate the individuals back to their respective countries after profiling is completed.
“As we speak, we have arrested 2,241 foreign nationals, made up of 384 male adults, 577 male children, 525 female adults, and 755 female children. All these persons are currently undergoing profiling,” said Amoako-Atta.

The operation, according to the head of public relations, was part of measures to rid the national capital of street begging and other unscrupulous persons who posed a threat to national security.
Street begging is quite common in the major towns and cities in the country, with most of the beggars from neighboring West African countries. Enditem
