Over 461,000 sit for 2025 WASSCE for school candidates

A total of 461,640 senior high school (SHS) candidates across Ghana are sitting this year’s West African Senior School Certificate (WASSCE) at 701 exam centres under strict supervision.

The candidates comprise 207,381 males and 254,259 females, reflecting a slight increase of 1,029 candidates compared to the 460,611 who sat for the examination last year.

The 2025 WASSCE for school candidates in Ghana officially begins, with the practical/project sessions in Art & Design subjects, including Basketry, Ceramics, Graphic Design, Jewellery, Leatherwork, and more.

The practical/project sessions will run from today until Friday, August 22, 2025, while the written practical will begin after the practical sessions and continue until Friday, September 19, 2025.

This calendar is specific to Ghana’s “school candidate” version of WASSCE. Other WAEC member countries (Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Gambia) continue with the traditional April‑May schedule, even as Ghana follows this shifted calendar instituted post‑COVID‑19.

Ahead of the WASSCE, Professor Ernest  Kofi Davis, the Director‑General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), strongly cautioned examiners, invigilators, and supervisors against any form of involvement in exam malpractice, including aiding candidates during the WASSCE.

“Those caught aiding or facilitating cheating will face strict disciplinary action, including possible dismissal,” said the GES Director-General.

He reiterated that Ghana takes exam integrity very seriously, following past incidents during the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), and the same zero-tolerance stance will be upheld for the WASSCE.

“The GES aims to preserve the credibility of national exams. Breaches by officials undermine fairness and student trust in the system,” he added.

By targeting invigilators and supervisors directly, GES emphasizes that not only students, but all personnel involved in the exam process must act with integrity. Enditem
