Parliament resumes May 27 to consider key bills

Ghana’s Parliament will resume on Tuesday, May 27 for its second meeting of the first session of the 9th Parliament in the floor of the House, a statement from the Speaker announced recently.

The legislators are returning to the House for the first time after it went on break on March 20, 2025.

Among key bills to be considered by the legislative body include the Grains Development Bill, which when passed is expected to boost sector growth through value addition.

Parliament may also exercise its oversight role by scrutinizing government policies and actions vis-a-vis as witnessed in the vetting process of ministerial nominees.

The rest are budgetary allocations, research grants, and financial management are likely to feature in the second meeting.

The first meeting of the first session of the 9th Parliament commenced on January 7 this year, lasting 11 weeks.

During the meeting, some 18 bills were presented before the House out of which 16 were passed.

These included the Electronic Transfer Levy (Repeal) Bill, 2025 or E-Levy Repeal Bill, the Revenue Administration Bill, 2025, Emissions Levy (Repeal) Bill, 2025, the Appropriation Bill and the Ghana Gold Board Bill, 2025.

However, the Environmental Protection (Mining in Forest Reserves) (Amendment) Regulations, 2025, was referred to the Committee on Subsidiary Legislation.
