Political parties begin submitting candidacy papers for Cameroon’s presidential election

Political parties in Cameroon have begun submitting applications to run for the country’s presidential election, authorities said on Wednesday.

“Right after the election date was announced, our teams were immediately set up to receive application files of aspirants,” Enow Abrams Egbe, chairman of Elections Cameroon (Elecam), the country’s electoral body, said during a meeting in the capital Yaounde with election stakeholders.

Elecam wants to organize the election in a “fair and transparent” manner, Egbe said, stressing the need for all stakeholders to “make our collaboration a decisive asset.”

Those wishing to run for the election have until July 21 to submit their application files, according to the country’s electoral code.

Incumbent President Paul Biya has announced his intention to seek re-election but has yet to submit his official candidacy.

The presidential election in the Central African nation is scheduled for Oct. 12.  Enditem
