Pope Leo XIV has sent a message of condolence to the government and people of Ghana over the military helicopter crash that claimed eight lives, including two cabinet ministers, confirmed a statement on Friday.
In a telegram message signed by Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State to the Vatican, to Don Matthew K. Gyamfi, Bishop of Sunyani and President of the Episcopal Conference of Ghana, the Pope expressed sorrow for all victims of Wednesday’s disaster.
“The Pontiff expresses his sorrow for the deaths of ministers, government officials, and all those who have lost their lives. Pope Leo also entrusts the souls of the deceased to the mercy of the almighty God and lifts prayers for those who mourn their loss, especially the relatives of the victims,” read the telegram message.
A model Z9 chopper belonging to the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) crashed near the Ashanti regional (provincial) town of Obuasi in the south of the country, killing all eight on board.
The military helicopter took off from the capital city, Accra, at 9.12 am local time to the gold mining town of Obuasi. On board were 3 crew members and five passengers, including the country’s defense and environment ministers.
Several world leaders and international organizations have commiserated with Ghana since the incident.
The Ghanaian government has launched a probe to establish the cause of the crash.
The government has also declared three days of mourning in honor of the victims and will hold a state funeral for them on Aug. 15. Enditem
