A senior lecturer at the Political Science Department of the University of Ghana, Prof. Alidu Seidu Mahama was on Saturday elected as the Parliamentary Candidate for the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Prof. Mahama secured 840 valid votes out of 1,511 valid votes cast, beating 11 other aspirants in the keenly contested NDC parliamentary primary.
His closest contender, Lawyer Hanan Gundadow Abdul-Rahman, former Mayor of the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly, polled 536 votes, while Dr. Seidu Fiter and Ing. Aliu Abdul Hamid polled 44 and 23 valid votes, respectively.
The remaining eight candidates polled votes between 3 and 10. A total of 1,511 delegates voted in Saturday’s primary out of a total of 1,551, with one ballot rejected.
Prof. Mahama expressed his gratitude to the party, delegates, and his fellow contenders for a competitive campaign.
The Electoral Commission (EC) is scheduled to hold a parliamentary by-election in the Tamale Central Constituency on September 30, 2025.
The seat became vacant following the tragic passing of former Member of Parliament for the area, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, in the helicopter crash on August 6.
Meanwhile, the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has announced it will not contest the by-election on humanitarian grounds. Enditem
