Efforts by rescuers to retrieve illegal miners believed to have been trapped in a mine collapse at Akeym Wenchi in the Denkyembour District of the Eastern Region proved futile on day two of the exercise.
Personnel from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana National Fire Service, the Ambulance Service, and locals were unable to make any positive headway due to logistical constraints, according to sources.
Ghanaian authorities are tight-lipped about the total number of persons who have lost their lives and are trapped underground.
However, eyewitness accounts say four persons were killed following the mining pit collapse late Wednesday, while some 20 others were trapped underground. Enditem
