Russia sets record in poverty reduction: Putin

Russia has set up a historic poverty reduction milestone, President Vladimir Putin said Friday at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).

“We’ve seen a record decline in Russia’s poverty rate throughout the country’s history,” Putin told attendees during a plenary session of SPIEF 2025.

The president noted that in 2000, about 42.3 million or 29 percent of Russians lived below the poverty line, but the figures have since fallen to around 10.5 million and 7.2 percent by the end of last year.

The 28th SPIEF, themed “Shared Values: The Foundation of Growth in a Multipolar World,” runs from Wednesday to Saturday, with a plenary session on Friday where Putin delivered a keynote address.  Enditem
