Sierra Leone ramps up surveillance efforts to curb mpox surge

Sierra Leone has seen a recent surge in mpox cases, prompting health authorities to step up surveillance measures to contain the outbreak.

According to the National Public Health Agency (NPHA), the country recorded 1,083 confirmed cases with 10 deaths as of Monday, while the number of recoveries stood at 294.

Foday Sahr, executive director of the NPHA, told Xinhua by telephone on Tuesday that the identified high-risk groups include health workers, children, the elderly, and immunocompromised individuals.

He stressed the need for these groups to avoid crowded places, noting that they would be prioritized for vaccination as part of the ongoing public health response.

In response to the increase in cases, the Sierra Leonean government has issued safety guidelines applicable to all public spaces, workplaces, schools, and places of worship.

“It’s imperative that we continue to contain this outbreak effectively,” Sahr said, underscoring the government’s commitment to protecting vulnerable populations while ensuring community safety.

According to health authorities, the government has dispatched health teams that are actively screening households in various communities for suspected cases of mpox.

“Surveillance, testing, and case management remain critical in our fight against mpox,” Sahr said.

In January, Sierra Leone reported its first confirmed case of mpox after the World Health Organization declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern last August.  Enditem
