Nollywood actress and entrepreneur Amaka Obi has spoken out strongly against domestic violence, stressing that abusive relationships rarely begin without warning signs.
In a chat with Potpourri, the actress said she is firmly opposed to marital abuse, noting that violence is often the result of ignored red flags rather than sudden, unexplained behaviour.
According to Obi, no one should endure intimidation or bullying in the name of marriage. While acknowledging that outsiders may not always know what triggers violent actions, she maintained that abusive tendencies usually manifest early.
She advised individuals to seek help or walk away once a relationship becomes emotionally or physically overwhelming, emphasizing that silence often worsens the situation.
“Noone should succumb to marital bullying,” Amaka says. “Even though we may not know what triggered the abusive action, I believe people don’t just wake up and decide to start beating their partners. You either would have seen that trait in them or they just suddenly became afflicted. (Which obviously should have a reason) I’ll say “speak up for help or leave when the situation has gone beyond what you can handle.”
The actress also shared her perspective on marriage, describing it as a union that should offer peace, safety and emotional fulfilment.
She urged people to think carefully before committing, adding that her ideal partner would be God-fearing, hardworking, purposeful and emotionally expressive. For Obi, love, humour, shared values and a sense of legacy are essential foundations for a healthy marriage.
Away from the movie scene, Amaka Obi revealed that she has taken a temporary break from acting to focus on expanding her business interests.
She is currently building Mirror Skin Africa, which recently launched MSHOMES, a furniture brand dealing in both imported and locally made household items. Expressing excitement about the brand’s future, Obi also disclosed plans to deepen her involvement in the influencing space, with ongoing collaborations with fashion and couture brands and more deals in view.
